The gloves came off in the world of industrial espionage as the U.S. Government squarely pointed the hacking finger at China and accused them of ripping off the trade secrets of key American corporations.
The U.S. Government has directly accused China of state sponsored cyber espionage and stealing industrial secrets in a dramatic turn in diplomatic relations for the two countries.
The have named and shamed five Chinese army officers as directors of the criminal enterprise.
Member of the China People’s Liberation Army were exposed in a remarkable breech of diplomacy as the U.S. Government has said that enough is enough and called a halt to the targeting of American top 100 companies including US Steel, and Westinghouse Electrics, the indictment read, the NY Daily News reported.
The row has been brimming for some time now as it has become clear that China has a military division dedicated to hacking and could some observers claim, take out much of the U.S. power grid at a few strokes of a keyboard.
China has denied the charges emphatically but it comes as the U.S. is still reeling from the revelations of Edward Snowden, the former digital expert who is now in Russia and who disclosed many of the digital spying of the U.S. agencies.
The U.S. Government has claimed that there has been a real threat to jobs because of the hacking.
"All around the country there has been a real and demonstrable loss of jobs in our communities," the federal prosecutor said, although bringing the indictments represented more a show of defiance and force than any realistic prospect of prosecution.
There is no prospect of the five accusers being extradited and being sent for trial in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania where the indictments have been laid out.
